SUMMARY:Uneven Geographies - Shiva Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Uneven Geographies gathers six artworks and community projects––by Mel Chin\, Radio alHara\, Raneem Ayyad\, Save Ennore Creek Campaign\, Su Yu Hsin and Suneil Sanzgiri–– that contend with the official policies and conventions that enable political\, economic\, ecological\, and cultural dispossession. Working across India\, Jordan\, Taiwan\, Palestine\, Kashmir\, and the U.S.\, the exhibition’s artists respond to environmental and territorial struggles through spatial interventions\, sound\, sculpture\, and moving images. In doing so\, they show that geography is not merely a fixed cartography\, but an ongoing social and political process that is made and remade through everyday acts of existence and resistance. \nThe opening night will feature an interactive performance by Raneem Ayyad: “Where Do We Meet the Sun?” that invites the audience to a staged visit to an apartment in Al-Zarqa\, Jordan. Through the everyday lives of three women and a collection of ethnographic materials\, the piece explores natural light as a medium of regulation\, gender discrimination\, and illness enforced by architecture and urban planning.
