DESCRIPTION:Join the John Jay community in viewing the documentary “Disruption” during the community hour (1:40 p.m.-2:40 p.m.) on Wednesday September 17\, in room 1.108 in the New Building.  It will be shown again\, for those who can’t make the first showing\, at 5:30 p.m. in room 1.85 in the New Building. \nDisruption is a fast-paced exploration of climate science\, politics\, solutions\, and the themes that define this crucial moment in human history. The movie is less than an hour long\, but packs a big punch.  Don’t miss it as we prepare for the People’s Climate March in NYC on Sunday\, September 21 (click here for more info on the march).

SUMMARY:Conference: "Radical Materialism: Making the World Matter"
DESCRIPTION:Join scholars and artists concerned about our material world given the problems associated with climate change at an all-day conference on September 10\, 2014 from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan. \nFrom the conference publicity: \nImages and words can be reportage\, witness\, representation\, and simultaneously also constructive\, connective\, material reality. How does the particular ability of images and words to hold all of these qualities act in a reconsideration of the earth’s resources? Continuing the James Gallery’s ongoing investigations into “things” and “objects\,” this conference will open discussion on fossil fuel imaginaries\, embodied research\, postcolonial ecologies and eco-aesthetics\, and the material/non-human turn with visual artists\, literary scholars\, art historians\, designers\, geographers\, activists\, and writers of literature and philosophy.
