SUMMARY:Geology of Fifth Avenue walking tour
DESCRIPTION:On June 7\, 2015\, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\, NYC H20 is sponsoring a walking tour of the city’s geological materials.  New York has an abundance of building stones -in lobbies\, on facades\, sidewalks and curbstone. These materials used in its streets\, building facades and lobbies show the richness and variety Earth history.  On our trip we will see many varieties of rock type from North America\, Europe\, Asia\, South America and Africa ranging in age from 3 billion years to a mere 1 million years old. And we will decipher the history that each rock tells. Water plays an important role in the formation of many of them. \nSidney Horenstein\, the tour guide\, is a geologist and environmental educator emeritus at the American Museum of Natural History. DESCRIPTION:Columbia University’s The Earth Institute presents the fourth of the 2014-2015 Sustainable Development Seminar Series\, Geoengineering the Earth’s Climate; Risks\, Opportunities\, and Governance Challenges\, with Scott Barrett\, Lenfest-Earth Institute Professor of Natural Resource Economics\, The Earth Institute\, Columbia University; Michael Gerrard\, Andrew Sabin Professor of Professional Practice\, Columbia Law School\, Director\, Center for Climate Change Law\, The Earth Institute\, Columbia University; Alan Robock\, Distinguished Professor\, Editor\, Reviews of Geophysics\, Director\, Meteorology Undergraduate Program\, Department of Environmental Sciences\, Rutgers University; and Richard Seager\, Palisades Geophysical Institute/Lamont Research Professor\, Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory\, The Earth Institute\, Columbia University.\n \nGreenhouse gas driven climate change continues unabated\, and it isn’t clear that the upcoming Paris conference will result in an international agreement able to prevent dangerous levels of climate change this century.  Against this background a recent National Academy of Sciences report recommended modeling and field research into geoengineering\, including “solar radiation management\,” as a possible way to limit climate change\, despite high levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases. In this seminar\, four panelists will discuss the climate impacts of solar geoengineering\, the opportunities and risks it entails\, and the international cooperation and conflict issues raised by purposeful intervention in the climate system.\n \nOpen to the public. SUMMARY:NYC H2O presents an Old Croton Aqueduct bike tour
DESCRIPTION:In 1842\, the Croton Aqueduct began providing water to NYC from the Croton River from approximately 40 miles north. In the decades before the aqueduct’s completion the city had suffered through epidemics of Asiatic Cholera and Yellow Fever because water came from increasingly polluted wells. The aqueduct was an incredible work of engineering never before accomplished on such a large scale. DESCRIPTION:From April 21 through 23\, 2015\, in the John Jay Cafeteria\, Lindsey Kaymen (Director of Environmental Health and Safety) will present the annual “EcoCinema Cafe” film festival a joint project of the college’s Sustainability Committee\, the Environmental Education Fund (EEF) and the SEJ minor.  During the day\, a running loop of recent environmental documentaries will be shown.  Check out the official film schedule to plan your viewing\, or wander in anytime to see what’s on! \nHere is some of the good stuff the film festival will be showing: \nLearn more about how women fought for democracy and brought forests back to Kenya (which had been deforested ) by coming to watch the film:  “Taking Root – the Vision of Wangari Maathai” on  Thursday.  The filmmaker\, Lisa Merton\, who lived with Maathai for many months will Skype in for a Q&A.  Read about Maathai here\, but hearing about her from her own voice is a different experience entirely!\n \nIn “Oil and Water\,” the Cofan tribe in Ecuador was desperate because their land was so contaminated by oil drilling and their rights were being trampled.  They sent Hugo\, a 10 year old\, to be educated in the U.S.\, in hopes that he would return to lead them into a better future. A decade later\, we follow Hugo as he returns to the Ecuadorian Amazon to meet his destiny\, armed only with a high school diploma.  David Poritz was just a sixth-grader when he learned of the oil disaster in Hugo’s homeland and decided to get involved.  Find out what happens…. It’s a great story and the filmmaker will be Skyping in.\n \n“Chasing Ice” – James Balog’s journey to convince the world that climate change is happening.  Visually stunning\, the director had just graduated from college and heard about the project.  He had never made a film.  He begged Balog……. SUMMARY:South Bronx Unite environmental justice bike tour
DESCRIPTION:Participants of all ages will visit sites along the community-designed Mott Haven-Port Morris Waterfront Plan\, including the proposed Lincoln Avenue waterfront park\, the 132nd Street pier and the historic Port Morris gantries. Participants will also learn about local organizing campaigns against subsidies to the trucking company FreshDirect as well as pollution and unjust land use from polluting fossil fuel power plants and waste transfer facilities that line the Bronx Kill waterway. Hurricane Sandy hit this flood zone during low tide\, causing 4.5 foot flooding in the area\, with forceful waves that ripped a pier from its concrete foundation. The tour\, organized together with Times Up!\, will highlight the community’s longstanding vision for the public waterfront land\, who is working with the community and who is working against the community. At 1:30\, we will return to Brook Park to join Friends of Brook Park\, Per Scholas and New York Restoration Project in providing 100 free trees as part of the MillionTreesNYC initiative.  For more information click here.

DESCRIPTION:A world renowned eco artist Betsy Damon will present her work to John Jay College students in the Professor Milena Popov’s “When Nature Roars: Global Catastrophe and Human Responsibility” class this Thursday\, February 19\, 2015 at 8:10 a.m. in the new building\, room 1.99. \nBetsy Damon has an MFA from Columbia University and has been an internationally known performance and installation artist. In 1985\, while making a paper cast of a dry stone riverbed in Utah\, she decided to devote the rest of her artistic life to water. She founded Keepers of the Waters in 1991 in Minnesota with the support of the Hubert Humphrey Institute.
