SUMMARY:The (il)legal trade in (e-)waste between Europe and West Africa: Lecture and discussion
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, November 3\, 2014\, 4:15 .m.\, rm. 3.80\, new building\, John Jay College of Criminal Justice \nDr. Lieselot Bisschop\, SEJ Program faculty and member of Dept. of Law\, Police Science & Criminal Justice Administration \nThis presentation focuses on the etiology and control of the illegal trade in hazardous waste. This builds on the findings of a case study about the illegal trade in electronic waste between Europe and West Africa. First\, the (environmental) harms of the hazardous waste trade are discussed. Second\, the international legal framework is briefly explained. Third\, this talk will address how governments\, corporations and individuals play a role in the illegal trade in waste and why they become involved. Building on these insights\, we will examine which actors prevent and control the hazardous waste trade\, what roles they play and how they interact. This illustrates the strengths and challenges that are inherent to controlling and preventing the illegal trade in hazardous waste.

SUMMARY:"Extreme Whether": A play about the future of our planet
DESCRIPTION:SEJ faculty member\, and adjunct instructor in the Communications & Theater Arts Department\, Karen Malpede wrote and directs Extreme Whether\, which hits the stage in NYC this fall (October 2-26\, 2014). \nExtreme Whether dramatizes the controversy over climate change but evolves into a reverie about the sublime in nature. The play couches this battle within a single American family\, set in the present at this critical point of ecological crisis. \nA major climate scientist\, an Arctic scientist\, an energy industry publicist\, and a lobbyist may share family ties\, but disagree intensely on the fate of our planet\, while other family members take even more extreme measures to sabotage environmental abusers. \nClick here to get tickets\, check out the venue (Theater for the New City) and read more about this ground-breaking play. \nThe October 16\, 2014 performance will feature an opening talk by Dr. Jerry Markowitz\, SEJ faculty\, who will discuss the relationship of industry to science as part of the Festival of Conscience that accompanies the performances of the play.  \n

SUMMARY:Conference: "Radical Materialism: Making the World Matter"
DESCRIPTION:Join scholars and artists concerned about our material world given the problems associated with climate change at an all-day conference on September 10\, 2014 from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan. \nFrom the conference publicity: \nImages and words can be reportage\, witness\, representation\, and simultaneously also constructive\, connective\, material reality. How does the particular ability of images and words to hold all of these qualities act in a reconsideration of the earth’s resources? Continuing the James Gallery’s ongoing investigations into “things” and “objects\,” this conference will open discussion on fossil fuel imaginaries\, embodied research\, postcolonial ecologies and eco-aesthetics\, and the material/non-human turn with visual artists\, literary scholars\, art historians\, designers\, geographers\, activists\, and writers of literature and philosophy. Held in tandem with the exhibition World of Matter\, the conference examines the creation of political worlds of words and images by approaching environmental crisis as a material question with deep roots and profound opportunities for the changing life of the earth. \nConference Schedule \n9.30am Introductory remarks by organizers Emily Eliza Scott (History and Theory of Architecture\, ETH Zürich)\, Ashley Dawson (English\, The Graduate Center\, CUNY) and Katherine Carl (James Gallery and Center for the Humanities\, The Graduate Center\, CUNY) \n10-11.30am “Resource Imaginaries” with Ashley Dawson (English\, The Graduate Center\, CUNY)\, Jennifer Wenzel (English\, Columbia)\, and Elizabeth Ellsworth (Media Studies\, New School and Smudge Studio) and Jamie Kruse (School of Design Strategies\, Parsons and Smudge Studio).
