SUMMARY:"Extreme Whether": A play about the future of our planet
DESCRIPTION:SEJ faculty member\, and adjunct instructor in the Communications & Theater Arts Department\, Karen Malpede wrote and directs Extreme Whether\, which hits the stage in NYC this fall (October 2-26\, 2014). \nExtreme Whether dramatizes the controversy over climate change but evolves into a reverie about the sublime in nature. The play couches this battle within a single American family\, set in the present at this critical point of ecological crisis. \nA major climate scientist\, an Arctic scientist\, an energy industry publicist\, and a lobbyist may share family ties\, but disagree intensely on the fate of our planet\, while other family members take even more extreme measures to sabotage environmental abusers. \nClick here to get tickets\, check out the venue (Theater for the New City) and read more about this ground-breaking play. \nThe October 16\, 2014 performance will feature an opening talk by Dr. Jerry Markowitz\, SEJ faculty\, who will discuss the relationship of industry to science as part of the Festival of Conscience that accompanies the performances of the play.  \n

SUMMARY:DATE CHANGE: Brown bag lunch talk on eco-aesthetics
DESCRIPTION:Art Professor Milena Popov will discuss the intersection of art and ecology at our kick-off brown bag lunch for the fall semester on October 14\, 2014\, at 1:40 p.m. at John Jay College (Manhattan) in room 7.63.41 NB (in the English Department).  Bring your own lunch and join fellow students\, environmental scholars\, and activists in learning more about this exciting field. \nThis presentation will define eco-aesthetics and glance over the spectrum of art and design that follows the principle of eco-aesthetics\, from Eco Art and design to ecouture\, green architecture\, and eco urban planning. Since Prof. Popov is developing a course called Eco Art and Design\, in this lecture she will present different types of Eco Art (from subtle ephemeral sculptures to large bioremedial artworks) and their difference from Environmental Art.  Through showcasing a few different artist (and artworks)\, design products\, architectural designs\, and ‘green’ industries\, she will analyze creative approaches\, meanings\, and impacts\,  including popular quasi eco design. \n

SUMMARY:Dancing Solar Flowers: Opening reception for eco-art installation on campus
DESCRIPTION:The opening reception for the exhibit of eco-artist Alexandre Dang’s\, Dancing Solar Flowers\, takes place on Wednesday\, October 15\, 2014\, at 5:00 PM at the entry to the Jay Walk\, 3rd floor of the New Building at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. \nDang’s scientific background informs his Dancing Solar Flowers– light driven installations raising awareness about sustainable ecological developments. These kinetic paper flowers use solar energy as their power to move\, and as they appear applied to the glass facing the Jay Walk\, they echo the natural backdrop outside thus bringing the outdoor environment indoors.
