SEIU Local 1199 is sponsoring an international forum on the occasion of the People’s Climate March entitled “Jobs, climate change, and system change” to take place on Thursday, September 18, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. at 310 W. 43rd St., 7th floor, Manhattan.
The forum confronts two issues which are not typically given much attention in mainstream discourse. The first is that confronting climate change can actually create jobs, contrary to conventional belief. The second point revolves around the need for a turning away from the privileging of business interests; according to the forum organizers, “we won’t change our planet without changing the class structure of our society.”
The panel members leading in this thought-provoking discussion are:
Asbjorn Wahl, Norwegian Union of Municipal and General Employees
Efleda Bautista, Alliance of Concerned Teachers, Phillippines
John Lyons, Chairman, Amalgamated Transit Workers NY
Estel Vazquez, Executive Vice-President, SEIU 1199
Tomas Garduno, Political Director, “Climate Works for All,” ALIGN
The panel will be moderated by Ed Ott of the Left Labor Project.
